Giant Places of North America for Kids

Beginner

Eight enormous places on one continent, for children aged 6 to 8, hosted by Lupe, a golden retriever puppy who discovers everything alongside the child. The course is a single journey southwards: it starts in the ice of Alaska and ends in the heat of Mexico, and the map that opens every episode is the same map with one more light switched on, so the child always knows where they are before a word is spoken. Every giant is then measured with the only ruler a child always has to hand — themselves. Denali is the roof of the continent at 6,190 metres, more than five thousand children stacked head to foot, with snow that never melts and air too thin to breathe without a bottle. The CN Tower went up in a little over three years and held the record for the tallest free-standing structure in the world for more than thirty. Niagara sends the water of five enormous lakes over one horseshoe edge at once — a giant that is huge sideways, not upwards. The Golden Gate wears international orange because that stretch of sea lives under fog and orange is what still shows when everything turns white. The giant sequoia General Sherman is the biggest tree on Earth, not the tallest and not the oldest, and it has stood in one spot for over two thousand years. The buttes of Monument Valley were never stacked: they are what the wind failed to carry away. The Grand Canyon is the one giant measured downwards, 1,800 metres of nothing where a river took the rock away. And the pyramid at Chichén Itzá is the smallest of the eight at thirty metres, yet every stone was carried by hand and its steps add up to 365, one for each day of the year. The last episode puts all eight side by side and answers the question the child has been holding since the first. Every place is a real photograph, every height is drawn against a child at the true ratio, and there are no exercises inside the videos and nothing to get wrong.
