Seven desert animals for children aged 6 to 8, hosted by Mig, a five-year-old boy who goes down into the desert alongside the child. The course opens on the fact that makes the rest make sense: desert does not mean sand, it means a place where it almost never rains — the biggest desert on Earth is Antarctica — and the same ground that burns your hand at noon makes you want a coat at night, because there are no clouds to hold the heat in. From there the whole course is one drawing: a slice of desert ground with six steps of shade, from the open sun down to the bottom of a closed burrow, and every episode goes down one and never climbs back. The camel stays up top in the sun with fat in his hump; the thorny devil drinks through his skin in the shade of the bush; the jackrabbit lets heat out through giant ears while lying in a shallow scrape; the sidewinder vanishes into the sand and moves in separate pieces; the scorpion glows green-blue under a rock; and at the deepest step the kangaroo rat, who has never drunk a drop, makes his own water out of dry seeds. Every animal is measured against a child, and the whole lesson fits in one sentence: the deeper you go, the cooler it gets.
