Careful, It's Poisonous!

Careful, It's Poisonous!

Beginner

A safety lesson for children aged 6 to 8, hosted by Ben, an eight-year-old boy. The course is not a ranking of which animal is strongest — it is built around the FOUR WAYS a poison can reach somebody: through the mouth, the skin, the sting and the bite, because each way has a different thing to do about it. Poison is shown throughout as what it really is, a shield: no poisonous animal in the world is hunting people, and all four ways have an IF in them, because the poison only arrives if somebody goes to it. Along the way the child meets the potted plant that sends the most children to hospital, the mushroom from the cartoons that exists for real, the dart frog that borrows her poison from her dinner, the wasp whose sting is a front door, the jellyfish that still stings from the sand, and the coral snake almost nobody ever sees. Then the course does the opposite of what it seems to promise: it shows the harmless animals that copied the warning colour, proving that colour lies, so the child is never taught to judge danger by looking. What is left is one rule that works while distracted, in a hurry and alone — looking is fine, touching is not — plus three calm steps if something ever does happen.
