Europe

Beginner

The second-smallest continent, and the one that spent five centuries rearranging everybody else's. Europe holds about 745 million people on roughly 10.2 million square kilometres, which makes it small, crowded and — because it has no natural eastern edge — the only continent whose boundary is a decision rather than a coastline. The convention runs down the Ural Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian, the Caucasus, the Black Sea and the Bosphorus, which is why Russia and Turkey are on two continents at once and why Istanbul is the only large city split between them. The course starts with the land. Europe is peninsulas hanging off peninsulas — Scandinavian, Iberian, Italian, Balkan, Jutland, Brittany — and it has more coastline for its size than any other continent, which is most of the reason its history is maritime. The Alps arc 1,200 kilometres through eight countries and split the continent's weather in two. The Volga runs 3,531 kilometres without once leaving Russia; the Danube touches ten countries, more than any river on Earth. And the North Atlantic Drift is why Norwegian ports stay open above the Arctic Circle while Canadian ports at the same latitude freeze shut. Then the regions, four episodes across them: the west, from Britain and Ireland to the Rhine and the Low Countries and an 83-million-strong Germany; the south, on the three Mediterranean peninsulas where Rome, Athens and the Renaissance happened; the north and east, from the Norwegian fjords and Finland's lakes across the North European Plain to Poland, the Carpathians, Ukraine's black earth and a Moscow of thirteen million. It closes with what Europeans built on top of the map: a Union of 27 states speaking 24 official languages, 21 of them sharing the euro since Bulgaria joined in January 2026, a Schengen area of 29 countries you cross without showing a passport, about 200 languages from a handful of families, and the oldest population of any continent.
