Homes of the World for Kids

Beginner

Seven episodes for children aged 6 to 8, hosted by Ben, an eight-year-old boy who travels the world one home at a time. The course runs on a ball with six bands, and each band is a place with different weather, because a six-year-old has no political map in her head but does have cold and hot. It opens with what is the same everywhere: every home holds a roof up high, keeps the rain off, keeps the warmth or the coolness inside, and has a door that closes, and it hands the child one sentence to carry to the end, which is that a home is made of what is nearby and does the job the weather asks for. Then the bands light up one by one. Snow, which warms because it is full of trapped air, in a travelling shelter built in hours for a few nights of hunting. Earth mixed with straw, in a wall so thick that the midday sun only arrives inside at night, and at Djenné, the biggest mud building in the world, refreshed by hand by the whole town once a year. A round tent with a wooden frame that folds like an accordion and travels with the animals. A house on posts whose floor is measured against the highest flood, with a boat where the bike would be. A long thatched roof over many families at once, and a log wall in the cold forest. And a tower block, which is a pile of homes sharing one roof, one staircase and one pipe. It closes on the point of the whole thing: none of these homes is better than the others, because the snow house would be an oven in the sand and the tower block could never follow the animals. Each home is the right answer for its own place.
