The course runs on a number line with ten stops, all switched off at the start, and each episode lights one. It opens with the hand as the first counting machine anyone owns, and the secret that makes counting work: the last number you say is how many there are, and the order you count in never changes that total. Then the zero, a real number that means none, proven honest by an empty plate, an empty nest and an empty basket. Then grouping, a pair is two, a dozen is twelve, half a dozen is six, because counting two by two reaches the same total as counting one by one, only faster. Then adding, which is never a table to memorize, only two groups pushed together and counted again from the start. Then taking away, which can shrink all the way to zero but never further than what is really there. Then multiplying, which is adding groups that are truly equal, like a beehive's cells or an egg carton's rows. Then dividing, which is sharing into equal parts, with a badly cut pizza as the running example of what dividing is not, and a leftover slice that proves a remainder is not a mistake. Then half and double, shown on a butterfly whose two wings match without being identical. Then grouping by ten on an abacus, where the top row is worth ten times the bottom one. And it closes on measuring, which turns out to be the exact same idea as episode one: counting how many times a little piece, a ruler's mark, a paperclip, a block, fits into something bigger.
